I love diction, and I’m a sucker for big, fancy words, but in my honest opinion, I truly can not find a word that quantifies my love for my family. Being in my family means never-ending hugs and kisses, the best/worst jokes of all time, a constant shoulder to cry on, best friends whom you can share secrets with, a safe and loving household that brings me utter joy. This all sounds really corny, and it is, but when you’re living in a home where all you feel is complete happiness, then nothing really feels corny anymore. Yes, they’re extremely annoying at times (why does my messy desk affect you, mom?), and I do need some space at times, but I know they’re always there for me, and to take my stuff without asking.

Meet the Parents

Basma Alwash, my mommy, my role model, my everything. She taught me it’s okay to be angry at things and have an opinion. Because of her, I found my passion, my zest for life, my happy place, like when she signed me up for my first ballet class, or bought me the whole Harry Potter series. She taught to fight for what I want (and what I don’t want, i.e. salad). And that it’s okay to be a nerd and proud.
Favorite food: Some vegetarian dish
Favorite movie: Oldies, like Sound of Music
Favorite t.v. show: Pride and Prejudice
Favorite hobby: Opera in the car
Favorite color: Green (she copied me)
Role model: Her hilarious dad

Imad Azzam, comedian of the year, my goofy dad, the best reason to smile. As a generally happy and fun person, my dad brings light into the family and reminds us all to take it easy and just calm down, life knows what it’s doing. Hilariously, he’s also sufficiently philosophical and tries to have the most random, deep talks with us, usually ending with us laughing at him.
Favorite food: Some Arabic dish that’s hard to pronounce
Favorite movie: Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile
Favorite t.v. show: Classics, like Open All Hours
Favorite hobby: Writing articles on conspiracy theories
Favorite color: Green (I know, I’m a trendsetter)
Role model: His sweet dad
